Smart Landscaping
Shading your windows with overhangs, trellises or by planting shade trees are all effective ways to reduce unwanted heat on hot, sunny days. They also act as windbreakers in winter.
This will reduce your cooling bill in the summer and heating bill during the winter while reducing gas emissions.
Plant trees or shrubs to shade air-conditioning units (but not to close or it may block the airflow.) A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.
